Nazarbayev University is building an innovation ecosystem where ideas and research developed by students, faculty and researchers can grow into technology ventures and reach international markets.
A key part of this ecosystem is the strategic partnership between Nazarbayev University Science & Technology Park (NU STeP) and StartX, a non-profit accelerator affiliated with Stanford University. Since 2022, 18 projects represented by NU STeP have participated in StartX programmes. They include Cerebra AI, Arlan Biotech, Defect AI, Mirai Tech and WeGlobal AI, working across artificial intelligence, medical technology, biotechnology, EdTech and DeepTech.
Among these projects, Cerebra AI is developing AI-powered technology for the early detection of stroke, while Mirai Tech is creating a portable AI-powered biomechanics laboratory designed to monitor recovery and help prevent injuries.
“We are proud that startups from Kazakhstan are gaining international recognition. We will continue to provide institutional and financial support to innovative projects aimed at the social and technological development of Kazakhstan. Partnerships with global innovation platforms such as StartX give entrepreneurs access to expertise, professional networks and new markets. The main result of this work is not simply the participation of our startups in international programmes, but the emergence of new technology companies capable of creating competitive products and representing Kazakhstan on the global stage,” said Aslan Sarinzhipov, Executive Vice President of NU.
The partnership demonstrates how university research, entrepreneurship, investment and international networks can come together to help Kazakhstani technology projects move beyond the local market.
