An executive delegation from Wabtec, led by Eric Gebhardt, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, visited NU to discuss opportunities for joint research and engineering projects, closer cooperation in digital technologies, and new opportunities for the University’s students and graduates.
With more than 150 years of history, Wabtec is a global leader in equipment, digital solutions and technologies for the rail industry. The company operates in more than 50 countries and employs more than 30,000 people worldwide. In Kazakhstan, Wabtec is developing locomotive manufacturing and introducing advanced engineering and digital solutions.
During the visit, the delegation explored NU’s research infrastructure and visited laboratories focused on renewable energy, high-voltage engineering, measurement systems and telecommunications. The guests also learned about NU’s research and technologies in advanced materials, 3D printing, seismic testing, robotics and mechatronics.
At a meeting with NU Provost Professor Rehan Sadiq, Vice President for Student Affairs and International Cooperation Dr Kadisha Dairova, and representatives of the School of Engineering, School of Computing and Artificial Intelligence, and Career Development Center, the parties discussed opportunities for joint research and engineering projects. Particular attention was given to artificial intelligence, automation, digital diagnostics and intelligent transportation systems, as well as the use of NU’s laboratory infrastructure for testing and developing technological solutions.
Another focus of the meeting was cooperation in talent development, including student internships, joint projects, mentoring opportunities and graduate employment.
The partnership between NU and Wabtec has been developing since 2022. Each year, the company offers internships to up to eight NU students and has supported the Mechaton Case Championship engineering competition for the past four years. Wabtec also takes part in the University’s career events and delivers guest lectures. NU graduates are among Wabtec’s employees in Kazakhstan, working across both engineering and management functions.
Following the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their interest in further developing the partnership and continuing discussions on specific initiatives that bring together NU’s research capabilities with Wabtec’s technological expertise and industrial capacity.
