Astana Police has terminated a pre-trial investigation started Aug 19, 2022 in connection with cases of alleged sexual harassment by students and faculty, described on social media by a NU student, due to the absence of a claim.
In accordance with the letter № 35-35-4-5/35-16967 dated Nov 2 2022, by the Yesil District Police Unit of the Astana City Police Department, a pre-trial investigation aimed to examine the information posted on TikTok by a student of the NU (hereinafter referred to as the University), has been closed on Oct 13, in accordance with paragraph 5 part 1 Article 35 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The student involved in the pre-trial investigation chose to continue their studies at the University.
The University adheres to a policy of zero tolerance for any violence, and takes comprehensive measures to prevent harassment and sexual assault on campus. Since its foundation, the University has applied international best practices to stop any discrimination, harassment and bullying in its community. The University’s Code of Ethics and other supporting programs ensure that students, faculty and staff conduct themselves and interact with each other in accordance with the highest ethical standards and based on mutual respect, trust, fairness and honesty. The University has introduced a response system to ethical violation reporting, and student assistance measures, including administrative, psychological assistance and legal advice.

To this date, the University administration does not have information about on-campus sexual violence cases, confirmed by a police investigation or court ruling. NU is ready to protect its reputation against misinformation and defamation.
