NU SEDS students’ project is called «Short-term and long-term forecasting of electricity consumption for efficient energy distribution and expansion of existing systems». As winners of the National Student Energy Challenge-2022 competition, the students received $4,000 in funding. The competition was held as part of the VII Youth Forum of the World Petroleum Council, “Energy transition: Dialogue of generations”, organized by the Association KAZENERGY September 28-29, 2022, in Almaty.
The energy-intelligence team is represented by 4th-year students of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Ali Almaganbet (team leader), Birzhan Kulmanov, Ali Zhunis, and Zangar Ermaganbet.
Students intend to solve the energy efficiency problem through accurate electricity consumption prediction. To do this, they use multiple data streams and machine learning techniques to determine future power consumption.
With the help of properly selected machine learning algorithms and neural networks, we will be able to get forecasts of electricity consumption for the whole country and regions and cities, which will significantly improve the operation of the power system.
Students noted that, if successfully implemented, the project could help improve the energy system’s efficiency and ensure a reliable and uninterrupted power supply for the country.
