On March 6, 2023, the Country Director of the British Council – Mr Eric Lawrie, visited NU in the framework of a guest lecture series held for the university community: students, faculty and staff.
In his lecture, Mr Lawrie shared his life journey story, from starting a career as a mapmaker to becoming a country director in the British Council. At the beginning of his work, Mr Lawrie had a fascinating career journey; he studied the ice movement in the Polar region. Later he switched to being an English tutor for the royal family in Bhutan. His entire career was abroad in various countries culminating in a diplomatic position with the British Council.
He passionately believes education is as important to international relations as politics, economics, trade and development. Mr Eric Lawrie has worked for the British Council in more than nine countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. During his career, Mr Lawrie has led several joint UK/host government education programs to build quality assurance in the secondary and higher education sectors to ensure graduates are trained for the job market’s needs and have the necessary skills for employability.
