Nazarbayev University, in partnership with the Margulan Institute of Archaeology and the Committee of Science of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, invites scholars, researchers, and practitioners to participate in the 2nd International Archaeological Symposium, which will take place on September 24-25, 2026, in Astana, Kazakhstan.
The Symposium aims to foster international academic dialogue and strengthen collaboration among scholars engaged in the study of cultural continuity and the ethno-political history of Kazakhstan, from antiquity to the ethnographic present.
This year’s theme, “The Great Belt of the Eurasian Steppes: Transformation of Cultures in Time and Space,”highlights the dynamic cultural processes that have shaped the Eurasian steppe throughout history. The event is dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the 35th anniversary of the Margulan Institute of Archaeology.
The Symposium will feature four thematic panel sessions:
- Caves as Archaeological Archives of the Eurasian Stone Age
- Proto-Industrial Landscapes of the Bronze Age: The Role of Steppe Eurasian Settlements in Transcontinental Metal Supply Chains
- The Phenomenon of Steppe Civilization: Power, Society, and Cultural Transformations
- Current Issues in the Medieval Archaeology of Kazakhstan
Researchers from Kazakhstan and abroad are encouraged to join this international platform for scholarly exchange and discussion of the latest archaeological research and discoveries.
