Dos Sarbassov, a Kazakh-American biologist and NU scientist, is completing the development of a drug that will make mutated cancer cells self-destruct. His drug, along with an American drug based on arsenic in low doses, has been shown to be effective against KRAS-mutant cells, which are found in 95%of pancreatic cancers, 30%of colon cancers, and 20%of lung cancers.

A team of NU scientists led by Professor-epidemiologist Byron Crape, who has been researching the causes of “sleeping sickness” in Kalachi for a long time, put forward their hypothesis about why the villagers were falling into sudden hibernation from late 2012 to October 2015. “In our study of Kalachi syndrome, we applied a scientific modeling method to find patterns.

NU students Diaz Takenov and Aruzhan Meirkhanova will undergo a one-day internship at the embassies of the Netherlands and Germany. October 20 is “World Osteoporosis Day” designated for raising global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis. This is a chronic progressive skeletal disease in which the density and structure of bone tissue is impaired.

On October 15-16, 2020, the Graduate School of Public Policy of NU (NU GSPP) held the fourth annual conference on the topic: “Sustainable Development Goals in Central Asia and the Challenges of COVID-19” in partnership with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and the Astana Civil Service Hub. Researchers, scientists, experts, civil servants, students from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, Russia, Great Britain, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Canada, Slovenia, Singapore, Israel and the United States took part in the conference, organized for the first time in an online format.

On October 8-9, 2020, the International Forum “Abai and Humanism”, dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the great Kazakh poet and thinker Abai Kunanbayev, was held online at NU. Over 125 participants from Kazakhstan, Turkey, the Netherlands, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and other countries gathered for the forum, which had the following goals: to popularize the creative heritage of Abai, instill patriotism in the younger generation, inspire love for the Motherland, and foster respect for the traditions and customs of the Kazakh people.
