NU Signs Memoranda of Understanding with Hong Kong Universities

On June 3, Nazarbayev University signed Memoranda of Understanding with The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) and Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee and was held as part of an official visit by a Hong Kong delegation to Kazakhstan. The documents were signed on behalf of NU by President Professor Waqar Ahmad.

The memoranda cover a broad range of areas: joint research and academic collaboration, conferences and seminars, short-term training programmes, student and publication exchanges, and joint supervision of graduate and doctoral students.

Welcoming the delegation, Professor Waqar Ahmad highlighted the university’s commitment to building the partnership and outlined specific areas of joint work: “We are developing programmes with PolyU — including a dual degree in robotics. You can be proud of your outstanding universities. We have much to learn from working with them, and we very much look forward to it.”

In his remarks, Chief Executive John Lee recalled the historic significance of NU within the Belt and Road Initiative: “It was here that President Xi Jinping first publicly proposed the joint building of the Silk Road Economic Belt — a strategic vision for connectivity, shared development, and common prosperity.”

He also pointed to tangible results already emerging from the partnership: last year, at the 10th Belt and Road Summit, NU and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology launched a joint Bachelor of Business Administration programme in Eurasian Business — the first of its kind in Asia. “I am confident this programme will bring far-reaching benefits for our students and our economies,” said John Lee.

The Education University of Hong Kong is a leading institution in teacher education and educational research, consistently ranked among the top universities in Asia. Hong Kong Polytechnic University, founded in 1937, ranks among the world’s top 100 universities and is renowned for its applied research and industry-focused education.
