NU graduates advanced to the semifinals of the European Universities Debating Championship (EUDС). For the first time in the history of Kazakhstan, Alisher Juzgenbayev and Mukhtar Tashkenbayev, members of the team ‘NU A’ qualified in the the EUDC’s semi-finals in the ‘Open’ category and quarter-finals in the ‘English as a second language’ categoryDue to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament, which was supposed to be held in the city of Nur-Sultan, was held online.

At the start of the year, an article entitled “Abai and Kazakhstan in the XXI century”, penned by the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, was published in the “Egemen Kazakhstan” newspaper. The article stated that both Kazakhstan and UNESCO have made plans to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Kazakh poet, writer, and philosopher Abai.

Fake news operates the same way as rumors and can be insidious in that it can cause panic, fear, and conflict. It spreads very quickly, either by word of mouth or by going viral in chat rooms or social media channels.

GSPP PhD student Daulet Akhmetov and GSPP Associate Professor Peter Howie published the article “COVID-19 and the Power Industry Response: the Case of Kazakhstan” in the International Association of Energy Economics’ “Energy Forum”. The article discusses the Kazakhstani energy sector’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today our interview is with Bakhytzhan Baptayev, a graduate of the School of Engineering and Digital Sciences, who this year successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in the “Science, Engineering and Technology / Materials Science and Engineering” program. What is the subject of your dissertation?My PhD research focused on a type of 3rd generation solar cells.

A group of researchers from the Graduate School of Public Policy: Stefanos Xenarios, Ronan Shenhav, Iskandar Abdullaev, and Alberto Mastellari, reviewed water security in Central Asia. The subject of their research was the issues of transboundary water resources in Central Asia, problems of water resources management, and climate change in the region.

Since its opening NU has taken a course towards the development of green technologies. The University cultivates respect for the environment and promotes an environmental agenda.

The NU (NU) community has been actively involved in the fight against the spread of COVID-19 since the very beginning of the virus’ entrance into the country. NU contributes to fighting the pandemic by means of its professors’ expertise, campus infrastructure, and by providing material, technical and management support.
