Researchers at NU and the National Laboratory Astana (NLA) have been honored with the award for Best Researcher 2021. Among the winners are Ainur Akilzhanova, Head of the Laboratory of Genomic Personalized Medicine at the NLA, Zhumabay Bakenov, Director of the Center for Energy and the Science of New Materials at the NLA, Damira Kanaeva, Assistant Professor at NU SSH, Bakhyt Matkarimov, Leading Researcher at the Laboratory of Biosensors and Bioinstruments at the NLA, and Assiya Yermukhambetova, a postdoctoral scholar at NU SEDS.

NU has become a new benchmark and model of a research university in the CIS countries, integrating education, science, and innovation, based on international practices. The fundamental principles of the University are meritocracy and academic integrity, providing world-class higher education in Kazakhstan at a lower cost than overseas scholarship programs such as Bolashak, and importantly, generating research-based knowledge in Kazakhstan rather than having to import it from abroad.

What is NU, and why does it need an endowment fund?

NU graduate Shynggyss Sadyk took part in the 2022 IRENA Youth Forum organised under the theme ‘Youth-led solutions to accelerate the energy transition and achieve climate objectives’ as part of the 12th session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly in Abu Dhabi, UAE. IRENA is an intergovernmental organisation that supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, and serves as the principal platform for international cooperation.

iGEM Kazakhstan team that consists of NU students became a winner of the gold medal in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition – an annual worldwide synthetic biology event for undergraduates, graduates, and high school students. iGEM competition is a truly international event with teams coming from all over the world.
