The South Korean corporation and Kazakhstan’s leading university signed a memorandum of cooperation, agreeing to collaborate on the Eco-Box project to enhance environmental awareness among youth. They have installed special campus waste bins to dispose of unusable smartphones, chargers, tablets, accessories, and other small-sized equipment, regardless of brand.

The camp was organized by Professors Ellina Moon and Lisa Lim, along with students Ainur Aimurziyeva, Aizhan Tolebay, and Altyn Zhuraliyeva. Ainur Aimurziyeva, a fourth-year biology student, won the «Social Impact 2023» competition last year, which allowed her to implement this project with a grant from the NU Social Development Fund.

These solutions might help the capital city to mitigate the risk of flooding and citizens’ needs in drinking water. The joint three-year German-Kazakhstani TERESA project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) ended recently.

More than 150 scientists from various countries, including Japan, Germany, China, South Korea, Russia, the UK, Taiwan, and Kazakhstan, are expected to attend. Nurzhan Umirov, a leading researcher at the Energy Storage Systems Laboratory and head of LLP “Battery Institute,” sat with a Kazinfrom reporter to discuss the conference.

Organized by the NU Office of Sustainable Development, the “National Conservation Initiative” Corporate Fund, and NU Green Campus, the event brought together students and faculty members from six universities: Karaganda Buketov University, Kozybayev University, East Kazakhstan Technical University, Kokshetau University, Kazakh Agro-Technical Research University, Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda University, and NU – about 30 people. The festival began with lectures by NU scientists and climate change experts from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and “QazaqGeography”.

This year, NU is conducting seven summer research projects for secondary school and university students. We received approximately 400 applications, and 80 students from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, China, and Kyrgyzstan were selected through a competetive process.

NU hosted a briefing with the participation of Professor Atakan Varol, Founder and Head of the Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence (ISSAI), Yerbol Absalyamov, Deputy Director for Operations, and Madina Abdrakhmanova, Deputy Director for External Relations. The speakers elaborated on developing a large language model of the Kazakh language—KazLLM.

The visit to Astana took place within the framework of the agreement reached during the official visit of the leadership of the Kazakhstani university to the leading universities and schools of Uzbekistan in April this year. Their accommodation on campus allowed them to fully immerse themselves in university life, where, despite the vacation period, research work continues and prestigious international Olympiads are held, particularly the IBO-2024 – a biology competition among schoolchildren from 81 countries.

On July 9th, practical exams for the 35th International Biology Olympiad began at NU, with 305 students from 81 countries participating. The practical exams cover four rounds: biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and animal anatomy and physiology.
