Nazarbayev University (NU) hosted a guest lecture by H.E. Christopher Duggan, Ambassador of Canada to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The event brought together faculty and students from across NU’s schools, many of whom are interested in pursuing diplomatic careers, to discuss Canada’s foreign policy priorities and its partnerships in the Central Asian region.
During the lecture, Ambassador Duggan shared insights on Canada’s diplomatic engagement in Central Asia, covering geopolitics, migration, regional security, and international cooperation. The discussion highlighted the importance of collaborative partnerships and Canada’s role in supporting regional stability and global initiatives.
Ambassador Duggan brings extensive experience in international diplomacy and public policy. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 2002 and has held senior positions including Director of the Middle East, Africa and Climate Change Division at the Privy Council Office, and Director in the Security and Defense Relations Division at Global Affairs Canada. His overseas postings include Romania, Jamaica, Nigeria, and he served as Deputy Director of the NATO Liaison Office in Ukraine from 2019 to 2021. Most recently, he was Director General at the Department of National Defense.
The lecture offered participants an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Canada’s approach to foreign policy and its engagement with Central Asia, while fostering dialogue on global challenges and diplomatic strategies.
