If you’re interested in how crisis reshapes society in real time—who gets included, who gets excluded, and why—please join us for a seminar that is designed to spark a real conversation, not just deliver a set of slides.
NUGSB Seminar Series
Speaker: Dr Jonathan Preminger (Cardiff Business School), Cardiff University, UK
Title: Crisis, Borders, and Work: Noncitizen Labour in Israel/Palestine after October 2023
Date: Wednesday, 4 March
Time: 4:00pm
Venue: C3 – 3016
The puzzle at the heart of the talk:
States and employers often depend on noncitizen workers—while simultaneously framing them as political outsiders. So what happens when an extreme security crisis hits? Does exclusion dominate? Or do economic pressures keep pulling noncitizen labour back in?
Drawing on rich empirical analysis of the labour market in Israel/Palestine after October 2023, Jonathan examines how key actors try to renegotiate access, entry, and employment terms during disruption—and why some structural market logics remain surprisingly resilient, with inclusionary pressures persisting even under crisis.
This will be of interest across multiple fields, including politics, sociology, migration and law, security studies, development, inequality, ethics, and work/employment research. Jonathan will also share the methodological challenges and opportunities of researching borders, labour, and power in fast-moving and politically charged contexts.
Please come along, and bring a colleague who enjoys a seminar that leaves you thinking long after it ends.
