Eligibility and Participation

  • Should meet English language proficiency requirements*
  • Should have a competitive CGPA in his/her current degree (i.e., 3.00 out of 4.00 scale or equivalent)
  • Agree to be responsible for tuition fee costs (excluding Exchange Students), and other costs, if requested. In case of sponsorship by an external organization, the incoming student should inform the Department of Internationalization
  • If applying as an Exchange Student, the student must be nominated by his/her Home Institution
  • Must agree to abide by NU rules and regulations and the internal security regime
  • Eligibility for each kind of program is set out in the announcement sent by email by the School or posted on the web page of the Hosting institution
  • The nomination deadlines for Academic Mobility programs at NU are the following: Fall semester – April 30 of each year, Spring semester – September 30 of each year. There is no separate application stage for the Academic Mobility programs. All the documents should be sent along with the nomination lists.

*Language proficiency requirement can be waived in the following cases:

  • one of the earlier academic degrees was earned in a country with English as the language of official communication, academic instruction, and daily life;
  • an undergraduate degree is/was earned in a program that is/was officially taught in English;
  • have passed 60 ECTS (European Credits) in English-taught courses. In case this information is not clear from the transcript, the Home institution shall issue an English proficiency letter (confirmation);
  • have valid IELTS/TOEFL certificates that meet the admission requirements of the academic program (Undergraduate / Graduate / PhD) at NU, where the candidate would like to be enrolled.

In the case of Research internships (non-credit bearing), the Schools may establish their own requirements for accepting incoming students. For more information, please contact faculty members (for research).

Application Process

Applicants to Academic, Research, and Cultural Mobility programs and courses submit the following documents to the NU School:

  • CV/Resume;
  • Official Transcript;
  • Copy of the Passport;
  • A personal statement indicating the motivation and expected benefits of participating in Academic mobility;
  • Recommendation letter;
  • English Proficiency letter (if applicable);
  • Internship Proposal Template (for research mobility);
  • NU Schools may request other documents and have additional requirements.

It is the responsibility of the student to understand the specific policies of the School he/she is applying to.

Visa

International students who are citizens of the countries indicated below can enter the Republic of Kazakhstan on a visa-free basis:

  1. Russian Federation
  2. The Kyrgyz Republic
  3. The Republic of Armenia
  4. The Republic of Azerbaijan
  5. The Republic of Tajikistan
  6. The Republic of Uzbekistan
  7. The Republic of Belarus

International students with a country of citizenship that is not listed above need a Student visa (C9) to come to Kazakhstan. This type of visa is given for a period of one year and allows you to make multiple entries to Kazakhstan. The visa shall be renewed each year.

The Office of International Scholars and Students Services (OISSS) will be assisting you to issue the Letter of Invitation (LOI) for your Visa. Once the LOI is ready, its copy will be emailed to you. To obtain Letter of Invitation (LOI) the following documents should be submitted by the international students to the OISSS:

  • NU Visa Support Invitation Form;
  • Copy of passport (first page);
  • Apostilled/Legalized Marriage and Birth Certificates (if applicable)

Upon receiving the invitation letter, the applicant must personally submit all required documentation to the Kazakh Embassy/Consulate where the visa will be obtained in person. Ensure that all personal information is accurate. If there are any discrepancies between the information on the letter of invitation and the passport, or if you identify any other inaccuracies, please notify International Students and Scholar Services at oiss@nu.edu.kz. We advise double-checking the list of required documents posted on the official website of the respective Kazakh Embassy/Consulate.

Required documents for the visa application:

  • Copy of the visa invitation letter
  • Passport (valid for at least six months beyond the visa validity and containing a minimum of two blank pages for visa stamping)
  • Copy of the main page of the national passport
  • Completed visa application form
  • One color photo (3.5cm x 4.5cm)
  • Multiple visa fee (200 USD per person)

The processing time for visa issuance is estimated to be from 5 (five) to 10 (ten) business days.

Please note that additional documents may be requested at the discretion of the Consulate.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Once you have received your KZ visas, please send scanned copies of your passport and visa to oiss@nu.edu.kz. Upon your arrival in Kazakhstan, please visit OISSS in Block 1, room 1.207, 2nd floor, within three (3) days to complete the registration process with the Migration Police.

Accommodation

Accommodation on campus is provided for all international students on a paid basis.

Health Insurance

  • As an international student and a member of our academic community, it is mandatory for you and your family members to have health insurance coverage and undergo a medical check-up.
  • It is highly recommended to purchase local health insurance from Medical Assistance, as this will facilitate easy access to medical assistance on campus.
  • The health insurance plan shall cover outpatient and inpatient medical assistance, emergency medical evacuation, and repatriation.
  • You can access medical services based on your provided health insurance at the University Health Center located on our campus, as well as in other clinics in Kazakhstan.
  • Before arrival, all admitted international students must submit the Health Background Form, where vaccination and health condition information shall be indicated. Instructions on how to fill it are here.

If you have any questions or require assistance related to health insurance or medical services, please reach out to your designated School coordinator. They will be your primary point of contact.
