Share this articleNU hosted the finals of the Student Sports League, where more than 750 students representing 52 universities from all over Kazakhstan competed in eight types of sports. The winners will go to the FISU Summer World University Games in Germany.
This year, the Student Sports League was held for the first time as part of a single tournament for all universities. The initiator of the joint competition and the organizer of the event is NU.
“The tournament’s status is elevated by the fact that winners of the competitions will have a chance to take part in the World University Games. We have here the strongest student-athletes Kazakhstan has to offer among amateurs. One of the league’s goals is to gather representatives of all universities to discuss further development. Out of 117 universities in the country, 52 of them were represented in the league, a fairly large number of people who are difficult to gather otherwise. We came together in the evenings to make suggestions for improving the league. Later, we will prepare a letter of recommendation to the Kazakh Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and we hope that some of our proposals will be accepted,” said Maxim Kriat, General Manager of the NU Health and Well-being Center.
Student teams competed in table tennis, Kazakh Kuresi, chess, togyzkumalak board game, basketball, swimming, kickboxing, and taekwondo. All competitions were divided into men's and women's categories.
Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Higher and Postgraduate Education of the Kazakh Ministry of Science and Higher Education Akerke Abylaikhan, as well as representatives of sports federations and professional athletes, attended the opening ceremony to support the students.
Swimming and kickboxing finals were the first to take place. 61 students from 14 universities participated in the swimming competition. The swimmers demonstrated their skills in freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke in 50- and 100-meter distances, as well as team relays. NU took the biggest number of medals, second and third places were shared by Kozybayev North Kazakhstan University and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
135 students representing 25 teams took part in the kickboxing tournament, which was held in youth categories in the WAKO Full Contact type. In terms of the total number of medals, Murtaza International Innovation Institution took first place, second place went to the Pedagogical College of Astana International University, and third place went to the Karagandy Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Students from 26 universities competed in Kazakh kuresi (Kazakh wrestling) in 10 weight categories. In terms of the total number of medals, Akhmed Yassawi University is in first place, Kazakh Academy of Sports and Tourism is in second place, and Atyrau University is in third place.
A total of 93 athletes(15 men's teams and 16 women's teams) competed in the tennis final. In the men's team competition, first place was secured by Peoples' Friendship University, second place by West Kazakhstan University, and third place by SDU. In the women's team competition, Shymkent University took first place, QYZPU came in second, and Shakarim University placed third.
14 university teams competed in seven rounds of togyzkumalak, a Kazakh board game. In the men's team competition, Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University took first place, Eurasian National University secured second place, and Zhubanov University came in third. In the women's team competition, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University won first place, Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University took second, and Margulan University finished third.
Students from 15 universities competed in chess, with each team playing nine games. In the men's team event, NU took gold, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University placed second, and Eurasian National University came in third. In the women's team event, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University won first place, NU secured second, and MNU took third. Besides medals, the winners of the chess tournament received a cash prize from the Kazakhstan Chess Federation.
The last competition held as part of the Sports League was the basketball finals. In the men's team event, KazGASA took first place, NU secured second place, and International Information Technology University came in third. In the women's event, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University took gold, Akhmed Yassawi University took silver, and Korkyt Ata University took bronze.
The futsal and volleyball finals will be held in the fall of 2024. The closing ceremony will take place after the winners in these sports are determined.
