The research article “New Narratives and Old Myths: History Textbooks in Kazakhstan” written by NU GSPP Professors Dr. Aziz Burkhanov and Dr. Dina Sharipova was published in the Nationalities Papers by Cambridge University Press. This article focuses on the role of textbooks in the construction of national identity by analyzing state-approved versions of national identity and history in Kazakhstan. By doing so, this project seeks to highlight what understanding of identity prevails in the history textbooks of Kazakhstan, what narratives regarding the key historic events are promoted, particularly with respect to the Dzhungar wars, the accession of the Kazakh Khanate to the Russian Empire, and the Soviet era.
The Nationalities Papers also feature an article about Kazakhstan that provides background about Kazakhstan for international audiences as well as a list of articles about Kazakhstan published on the platform. The article was written by SSH Associate Professor Caress Schenk together with Harris Mylonas, Associate Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University and the editor-in-chief for Nationalities Papers.
