On Sept. 7, NU played host to a conference dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the global Belt and Road Initiative, as well as the “Golden Age” of interaction between China and Central Asia. The event was organized by the Chinese Xinhua and China Daily news agencies, the China Studies Centre in Kazakhstan, with the support of the 21st Century newspaper, the New Media Center of the Xinhua News Agency and the Taihe Institute.
The conference, held in NU’s Senate Hall, where the Belt and Road Initiative was first announced 10 years ago, brought together about 200 people. Among them are government representatives from Kazakhstan and China, members of the diplomatic corps, Kazakh and Chinese media managers, as well as NU administration.
The event began with a congratulatory letter from Erlan Karin, the Kazakh Secretary of State, who lauded the BRI as a testament to open, inclusive, balanced, and comprehensive cooperation among all involved parties over the past decade.
The conference featured esteemed speakers, including Eldar Torganbaev, the Deputy Minister of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Eset Baiken, Deputy Akim of Astana, Qu Yingpu, President and Editor-in-Chief of China Daily, Zhang Xiao, Chinese Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Djoomart Otorbaev, former Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Vladimir Norov, former SCO Secretary General, and Gulnar Shaimergenova, Director of China Studies Center. Each of these distinguished guests delivered warm welcoming remarks, highlighting the significance of the BRI and its impact on international cooperation.
Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Eldar Torganbaev emphasized the fruitful results achieved in economic, trade, cultural, and media exchanges between China and Kazakhstan since the beginning of their cooperation in 1992. He also praised the role of events such as the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia and the SCO Youth Council in strengthening the friendship between the two nations.
Chinese Ambassador Zhang Xiao's speech underscored the global reach of the BRI, with more than 30 documents signed between China and a quarter of all countries connected along the ancient Silk Road. “These countries are historical partners. Over these 10 years, railway communication between China and Central Asia has increased, and the China-Central Asia gas pipeline is being built. The development plan for the next golden 30 years was recently signed. Today we see that multilateral cooperation wins over unilateral principles,” emphasized the Chinese Ambassador to China.
The conference delivered concrete results with the signing of memorandums of cooperation between "Деловой Казахстан" and China Daily's “21st Century" newspapers, as well as between the China Studies Center in Kazakhstan and the Taihe Institute. The conference participants celebrated the remarkable achievements of the Belt and Road Initiative over the past decade and expressed their unwavering commitment to furthering cooperation in various spheres.
