The Graduate School of Education at Nazarbayev University (NU GSE), ranked among the top 200 globally by Times Higher Education, is implementing a professional development programme titled Regional Leadership in Education: Innovation and AI in Action.
This initiative is designed for heads of regional education departments, principals of schools and colleges, directors of preschool institutions, as well as specialists from district and municipal education offices and the Ministry of Education.
Running from February to September, the programme features an international module titled Symbiosis of Teacher and Artificial Intelligence: Fostering a Professional and Innovative Educational Environment. This module takes place in Shanghai in partnership with East China Normal University and the UNESCO Teacher Education Centre.
From July 1 to 7, participants took part in an intensive training programme in China focused on the global transformation of education systems and current reforms in Kazakhstan. The agenda included lectures, expert forums, thematic case sessions, school visits, and tours of laboratories and research institutes, as well as meetings with technology companies and government representatives. Discussions covered AI in pedagogy, new models for teacher evaluation, strategic school management, and the development of inclusive learning environments.
“For NU GSE, this module marks a step towards sustainable partnerships with the regions. Our aim is not only to transfer knowledge, but also to promote strategic dialogue, professional growth, and innovative education management. The Shanghai module strengthens regional capacity and supports the integration of technologies that enhance the quality and accessibility of education in Kazakhstan,” said Zhanyl Zhontayeva, Director of Professional Development Programmes at NU GSE.
A special focus was placed on practical outcomes: participants developed management initiatives tailored to regional contexts. These initiatives will be refined in the fall and integrated into a national support system for education leaders. Notably, this is NU GSE’s third major project in the field of educational leadership. In 2023, 80 rectors and vice-rectors were trained, followed by 80 deans and department heads in 2024.
