NU – Content Partner of the Asia Universities Summit 2025

From April 22 to 24, 2025, the Asian Universities Summit will be held in Macau (China), organized under the aegis of the prestigious international educational ranking Times Higher Education – one of the most respected global rankings in higher education.

At this significant event, the President of Nazarbayev University, Waqar Ahmad, and the Director of the Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence (ISSAI) at the university, Atakan Varol, will present ISSAI KazLLM. They will conduct a session titled “Kazakh Large Language Model: How Can Universities Drive Translational Impact in Generative AI.”

The summit will serve as an important platform for discussing Asia’s role as a center for innovation in science, technology, and society. Over 80 speakers from leading Asian universities, including Tsinghua University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, National University of Singapore, Tokyo University of Science, University of Adelaide, and others, will share their scientific developments and ideas at the summit themed “Asia’s Rise: A Transformative Journey in Science, Technology, and Innovation. Topics for discussion will include breakthrough innovations in Asia, the potential of regional universities in the development of higher education, the growth of scientific research in the region, strategic communication of university research outcomes, startup culture, and more.

The Kazakhstani delegation, represented by Waqar Ahmad and Atakan Varol, will showcase Kazakhstan’s achievements in the field of generative artificial intelligence through examples of ISSAI projects, such as the Kazakh Large Language Model KazLLM, the Kazakh-language virtual assistant Umai, the bidirectional machine translator Tilmash, and other initiatives. They will share insights on how universities can make a significant impact on the practical application of AI technologies, which, in turn, fosters innovation and addresses pressing societal challenges.

Participation in this global summit will allow Nazarbayev University not only to actively engage in global discussions but also to expand its network, establish partnerships with leading educational and research institutions, and further strengthen its reputation as a leader in higher education and science in Central Asia.
