New Kazakh terminology in AI and robotics

Now the Kazakh language contains translations of numerous terms and words used in the field of artificial intelligence, data analysis, robotics, and computer science. The glossary developed by scientists at NU's Institute of Intelligent Systems and Artificial Intelligence (NU ISSAI), which contains various versions of translations of terms from English into Kazakh, has been submitted for approval to the Language Policy Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan (formerly MES RK).

Now the Kazakh language contains translations of numerous terms and words used in the field of artificial intelligence, data analysis, robotics, and computer science. The glossary developed by scientists at NU’s Institute of Intelligent Systems and Artificial Intelligence (NU ISSAI), which contains various versions of translations of terms from English into Kazakh, has been submitted for approval to the Language Policy Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan (formerly MES RK).

“We initiated the development of the glossary and the approval of the terms because we found that there was no officially approved translation into Kazakh for many terms in the field of AI, data analytics and robotics. Since the field of AI is actively developing and becoming more common in Kazakhstan, we decided to offer a translation of the terms,” says ISSAI Founding Director, Professor Atakan Varol.

During meetings of the Republican Terminology Commission with linguistic experts and ISSAI specialists, some words had been accepted without translation and with original English pronunciation. Others received an official Kazakh translation. For example, the term artificial neural network was translated as zhasandy neurondyk zheli, and the term boosting was decided to be used as a borrowed word – boosting. A total of 672 words were officially approved.

“We are very pleased that we have been able to contribute to the development of the Kazakh language in the digital environment,” added Professor Varol.

The approved terms are available on termincom.kz and ISSAI’s official website.
