Share this articleNU (NU) signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) during their visit to the US-based school.
A group of NU professors led by NU Acting President and Provost Dr. Ilesanmi Adesida visited the UIUC on Oct. 3-5 to participate in a seminar. During their visit, the two universities signed a memorandum to build cooperation.
The memorandum covers joint educational, cultural, and research activities; exchange of faculty members and students for research, lectures, and discussions; participation in seminars and academic meetings; exchange of academic materials, publications, and other information; and special and/or short-term academic programs.
Four NU professors also led seminars, where they spoke about their research. Vice President for Medicine, Dean of NU School of Medicine Massimo Pignatelli spoke about NU’s medical ecosystem that integrates training, research, innovation, and patient care. He also emphasized NU’s collaboration with national entities to support the establishment of the medical-pharmaceutical cluster in Astana, which aims to encourage synergy between academia and the healthcare industry.
Biology Professor at the School of Sciences and Humanities, Director of the Center for Life Sciences Dos Sarbassov presented two main projects in the field of nutrient-dependant nuclear processes controlling cell growth and survival. As a result of one of the projects, his team created a drug targeting mutant cancer cells.
Vice Dean for Research at the School of Engineering and Digital Sciences, Acting Director of the Center for Energy and Advanced Materials Science Zhumabay Bakenov presented the research of his team on improving the performance and adaptability of lithium-ion batteries. He also highlighted advanced methods of processing raw materials for battery application, and efficient battery recycling technologies.
Chair of the Robotics Department at the School of Engineering and Digital Sciences, Director of the Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence (ISSAI) Huseyin Atakan Varol spoke about ISSAI’s research and innovations, specifically the application of Augmented Reality goggles to assist humans with memory or visual impairments.
NU and UIUC hope the signed MoU will bring even more outstanding researchers to each others’ doors in the future.
