NU joined a global research consortium aimed at examining the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education and workforce development.

The consortium, led by the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) and the Institute of International Education (IIE), brings together seven universities to investigate how AI can be integrated into education systems to better prepare students for the demands of an AI-driven global economy.

“As part of this initiative, NU will conduct a multi-case study focusing on Learning and Teaching Practices across different academic levels, from foundation to undergraduate and graduate programs. This research is vital as it highlights best practices in leveraging AI for learning and teaching in higher education. The invitation to participate reflects NU's strong reputation in the region and its commitment to advancing education through innovation,” said NU’s Professional Learning and Development Expert Aida Nuranova, one of the university representatives involved in the project.

NU will also take part in a series of workshops designed to foster collaborative learning and knowledge-sharing among consortium members, which include the University of Pennsylvania (USA), Universidad Camilo José Cela (Spain), Ashesi University (Ghana), Birla Institute of Technology & Science (India), Universidad de los Andes (Colombia), Hamad Bin Khalifa University (Qatar) and NU.

The WISE Global Research Consortium was formally launched during a meeting in New York, which coincided with the UN General Assembly. Speaking about the development of the consortium, Stavros Yiannouka, CEO of WISE, said “This is the first time we have developed a multi-partner research consortium of this nature – enabling us to explore these topics across different world regions and perspectives, to provide new insight with global relevance. Our aim is to help inform both policy and practice – and ensure this most potent of technologies is harnessed in the service of quality education for all.”

During the meeting, consortium members participated in a workshop and panel discussion to exchange ideas on how AI can best be utilized in higher education. Nuranova represented NU as a panel speaker, sharing insights on the university’s ongoing research and discussing the broader implications of AI for the future of education.

The research will continue over the next 12 months, with findings to be unveiled at the next WISE Summit in Qatar in November 2025. Through its participation, NU not only contributes to shaping the future of AI in education but also strengthens its global connections and leadership in innovative educational practices.
