SLL Conference Showcases Top Student Eco-Initiatives

The Office of Sustainable Development organizes the SLL program with support from Chevron.

On May 20, 2025, Nazarbayev University hosted the final conference of the Sustainability Living Lab (SLL) — an inter-university initiative that empowers students to develop and implement innovative sustainability solutions.

Eight of the best projects were recognized, including four from NU students: a green hydrogen production technology, a campus-based sustainable cycling system, energy-storing bricks from coffee waste, and an automated water-saving irrigation system.

Kozybayev University students presented two initiatives: biodegradable single-use tableware and a solar energy learning platform. The top project from Buketov University involved creating organic fertilizer from sheep wool and waste paper. At the same time, students from Yessenov University showcased building materials made from plastic and paper waste.

The conference program also featured expert lectures, a startup acceleration workshop by Astana Business Campus, the Climate Fresque game, and a field trip to the Renewable Energy Test Site.

Since its launch in 2019, the SLL program has supported over 80 student eco-projects and engaged over 1,000 students from 12 universities across Kazakhstan. Participants have received mentorship, mini-grants, access to infrastructure, and opportunities to present their projects on national and international platforms.
