Opportunities to integrate Nazarbayev University’s research capacity with Kazakhstan’s nuclear energy sector, advance applied research, and train highly qualified specialists were the focus of a visit by Almasadam Satkaliyev, chairman of Kazakhstan’s Agency for Atomic Energy, to the university on January 21.
During a meeting with NU leadership, the sides discussed priority areas for cooperation, including the involvement of university researchers in providing scientific and technical support for nuclear energy projects, as well as the development of nuclear and radiation technologies and materials science.
Almasadam Satkaliyev toured the university’s research infrastructure, visiting laboratories specializing in pulsed ion accelerators, electron microscopy, nanofabrication, advanced robotics and mechatronics, and energy and space engineering.
Special attention was given to the recently established Institute of New Materials and Energy Technologies, led by Prof. Zhumabay Bakenov. The institute presented its research and educational capabilities, highlighting work on advanced materials for nuclear and fusion applications, sensor systems, and technologies aimed at enhancing nuclear safety.
Following the visit, the agency’s chairman commended the level of research expertise at Nazarbayev University and expressed interest in leveraging its research infrastructure to address applied challenges relevant to Kazakhstan’s nuclear energy sector.
