Advancing Graduate Education
The leading international platform for graduate education leaders and professionals, the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS), invited representatives from NU to participate in the 2025 Summer Workshop and New Deans Institute. Held from July 12 to 16 in Portland, USA, the event brought together academic leaders and experts from around the world to discuss current challenges and trends in graduate education. The program featured an intensive course as part of the New Deans Institute, plenary sessions, interactive discussions, and practical workshops.
“Inspired by past CGS events, our second Three-Minute Thesis competition, founded by The University of Queensland, for PhD students in 2026 will sharpen their research communication skills. At the same time, an exciting new ProQuest feature to showcase our PhD dissertations is on the near horizon – promising a brilliant future, with even more graduate students to come”, said Luis Ramón Rojas-Solórzano, Associate Provost for Graduate Studies at NU.
Key topics addressed inclusive mentoring, student well-being, sustainable funding for educational programs, effective communication within university communities, and leadership during times of instability and change.
NU was represented by Gulnaz Bulebayeva, General Manager of the Office of Graduate Programs. The event facilitated the presentation of NU’s institutional experience, strengthened connections with international colleagues, and contributed to shaping the future of graduate education globally. NU participants extends its warm thanks to Dr. Chevelle Newsome, President of CGS, for her inspiring leadership and gracious hospitality throughout the event.
Since 2019, NU has been a permanent international member of CGS. As a leading research university, NU is committed not only to global partnerships and spreading best practices in graduate and PhD training but also to promoting Kazakhstan’s scientific potential and educational initiatives on the world stage.
