The NU Kazakh Stage student club presented a play based on Azilkhan Nurshaikov’s novel “Mahabbat, qyzyq mol jyldar” (“Years of Joy and Love”) at NU with the support of the NU Cultural Center “Rukhani Zhangyru”. The Kazakh-language performance drew a full house on November 15, 2022.
In the story, a young man, Yerbol, enrolled in university after returning from the war, where he fell in love with his groupmate Mentai, who responds in kind. However, their feelings went through challenges.
“Since this novel was about student life, love and friendship after the war, this theme is very close to us. I’m not exaggerating if I say we played ourselves in this play. The Kazakh stage team did a great job because the club members were not only actors, but they worked on directing, producing, and writing the script. I want to express my gratitude to them,” said director Aisultan Omirbay, a third-year NU SEDS student.
The play’s plot also touches on current social problems, violence and relationships in a family. While writing the script, students aimed to foster values such as friendship, brotherhood and solidarity among students. Another goal is to show the beauty and depth of Kazakh theatre art through creativity and increase the university community’s interest.
The Kazakh Stage Club was formed on September 6, 2019, at NU and is still actively developing. Today the club is becoming recognizable not only due to the promotion of the Kazakh language and culture through theatrical performances but also through other club events.
