NU hosted II International Onomastic Symposium

The II International Onomastic Symposium has been organized by the NU Department of Turkology and Kazakh Language together with the Turkish University of Ege and the support of the International Turkic Academy. The online event took place from May 20-22 with the participation of 72 onomastic specialists from 14 countries.

On the first day of the symposium, researchers touched upon various onomastic problems. The participants presented their research on toponymy, oikonyms and oronyms, hydronyms, and choronyms. They also talked about the modern application of onomastics in science and literature, which caused an active discussion.

On the second working day of the symposium, participants from Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan discussed topics related to linguistic units: toponyms. There are many centers for onomastics study within these counties. Also, the number of young researchers in this direction is increasing. This tendency indicates a growing interest in onomastics and linguistics in the countries of the Turkic world.

On the last day of the II International Onomastic Symposium, the participants touched upon issues related to the development of the Kazakh language and other Turkic languages and the development of onomastics.

The chairman of the symposium, Zhazira Agabekkyzy, summing up the work of the three-day event, noted the necessity of founding a scientific onomastic center and inviting a wide range of scientists and researchers in order to an in-depth study of Turkic onomastics. According to her, it is important to digitize existing data on Turkic onomastics and to establish the journal “Turkic Onomastics” for permanent publications of scientific research in this field. Participants agreed to resume the work of the site “Onomastics. kz ” by creating a single domain for all countries of the Turkic world.

The next symposium is planned to be offline in the Turkish city of Izmir under the name “United Heritage.”
