NU Discusses the Development of Medical Education in Kazakhstan

On October 9, Nazarbayev University School of Medicine (NUSoM) hosted a roundtable on the development of medical education in Kazakhstan, attended by Askhat Aimagambetov, Chair of the Mazhilis Committee for Socio-Cultural Development.

The discussion brought together First Vice Minister of Health Timur Sultangaziev, NU Vice President Kadisha Dairova, chief physicians of the capital’s hospitals, as well as residents from NUSoM and Astana Medical University.

The roundtable, titled “Collaboration Between Educational and Healthcare Institutions: Access and Mutual Engagement,” focused on key issues in medical education. Current residents from the capital’s universities shared their challenges and suggestions, while representatives of government bodies and medical organizations discussed potential solutions.

“We recently received the draft law. Over the summer, at Karaganda Medical University, we actively discussed ideas for its improvement with the Ministry of Health. However, we are still far from a full understanding of how exactly medical education should be reformed. There are contradictions, and today we hope to clarify several of these issues,” said Askhat Aimagambetov.

In turn, Kadisha Dairova emphasized that although the university enjoys autonomy and academic freedom, it should not stand apart from changes within the system. She noted that as a new model is introduced, it is essential to continue developing it together with colleagues and to actively participate in the process.
