NU and the Bulat Utemuratov Foundation Launch Joint Project to Support Children with Autism

Nazarbayev University (NU) and the Bulat Utemuratov Foundation (the Foundation) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a new chapter in the development of inclusive technologies and support for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Kazakhstan.

As part of this new partnership, the two parties will collaborate on an interdisciplinary project titled April: AI-Powered Solutions for Robotic Autism Therapy, developed at NU. The project aims to integrate cutting-edge artificial intelligence and robotics into therapeutic practices to support children with autism.

This is the first robotic therapy system for children with autism developed in Kazakhstan. The project is led by NU Professor Anar Sandygulova. Testing of the APRIL system is still ongoing, with the team currently working on expanding its implementation in major centers and collecting data for further optimization.

The MoU was signed by NU Vice President Dr. Assel Uvaliyeva and CEO of the Bulat Utemuratov Foundation Ainur Karbozova.

NU Vice President Dr. Assel Uvaliyeva noted:

“If families and children would like to visit the campus or participate in sports activities at our Athletic Center, we are happy to help. We understand that logistics can be challenging, so we are ready to take care of all the arrangements — give them a tour, spend a day together, and create a comfortable and friendly environment using our infrastructure.”

The signing of the MoU is expected to serve as a starting point for long-term, socially focused collaboration aimed at advancing national priorities in inclusive education and digital healthcare. The partnership will combine NU’s scientific and technological expertise with the Foundation’s practical experience and infrastructure to improve the quality of life for children with autism and their families in Kazakhstan.

The Autism. One World for All program has been implemented by the Bulat Utemuratov Foundation since 2015. As part of this program, 13 free “Asyl Miras” autism centers operate in 12 cities across Kazakhstan. Over the years, more than 17,000 children have received support through these centers.

The centers operate in accordance with international standards and offer programs based on evidence-based methods, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). All specialists undergo mandatory training and certification.
