NU and SOAS launch joint programme in Global Affairs and Eurasian Studies
A new joint one-year Master’s in Global Affairs and Eurasian Studies with Nazarbayev University (NU) Kazakhstan was launched today at SOAS University of London. This agreement signifies the first joint Master’s programme in Kazakhstan with a UK university. NU President Professor Waqar Ahmad and SOAS Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Habib were joined by representatives from the Embassy of Kazakhstan in the UK at the formal signing ceremony for this new equitable partnership.
NU President Professor Waqar Ahmad and SOAS Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Habib officially launched the programme at a signing ceremony in London and Astana, joined by senior representatives from both institutions.
Responding to the growing demand for English-taught graduate education in Kazakhstan and across Eurasia, the new programme explores the geopolitics of Central Asia and the Caucasus, alongside the political and economic dynamics of Russia, China, and wider Eurasia. It equips students with analytical tools and regional insights to navigate the challenges of an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
Students will study in both London and Astana, spending their first semester at SOAS and the second at NU, where they will have the opportunity to complete an internship in a diplomatic mission, think tank, or NGO. Each student will be co-supervised by academics from both universities, offering an interdisciplinary and globally connected learning experience.
Professor Waqar Ahmad, President of Nazarbayev University, said:
“Nazarbayev University and SOAS University of London are extraordinary institutions. I am delighted that we are joining forces to offer this unique Master’s program, providing students an exceptional opportunity to study and gain practical experience in global relations through carefully chosen placements.”
Professor Adam Habib, Vice-Chancellor of SOAS, said: “Today’s announcement shows our continued commitment to make education more accessible in our regions. We are incredibly proud to be moving forward with this innovative joint programme – where students will have the opportunity to live and study in two world capitals – Astana and London. Our international partnerships are at the very heart of what we stand for as a university.”
The programme builds on the Memorandum of Understanding signed in August 2025 in London, where Professor Ahmad and Professor Habib formalized a new partnership between NU and SOAS. The collaboration advances student and faculty mobility, fosters cross-cultural research, and supports Kazakhstan’s national vision—led by Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek – to establish the country as a regional hub for higher education reform.
By combining the institutional strengths of SOAS and NU in international relations and Eurasian studies, the programme provides students with a unique academic foundation and practical exposure through internships in Astana’s dynamic international environment. Prospective students can register their interest to receive updates and details on the programme and application process. The programme will be available from September 2026.
