The Department of Internationalization at Nazarbayev University (NU) organizes a monthly event called World on Wednesdays, aimed at fostering intercultural dialogue and celebrating the diversity of the NU community.
Currently, NU is home to 324 international students from 38 countries, including 13 from Kyrgyzstan.
A special edition of WOW Kyrgyzstan brought together the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kyrgyzstan to Kazakhstan, Mr. Dastan Dyushekeyev, faculty and students of NU and L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, as well as representatives of the Kyrgyz diaspora in Astana. The event was dedicated to the Kyrgyz Language Day, celebrated annually on September 23 since 1989.
“For us, Kyrgyzstan is not only a neighboring country but also a strategic partner and a reliable friend. We are proud that an increasing number of students from Kyrgyzstan are choosing our university, and we are committed to strengthening these academic and cultural ties. Kyrgyzstan is one of NU’s priority countries, and this year we plan several visits to the brotherly nation to expand cooperation. In this context, I would especially like to highlight the Abay Kunanbayev Scholarships, which cover tuition, health insurance, and on-campus accommodation,” emphasized NU Vice President Assel Uvaliyeva.
The festive program was rich and vibrant: Kyrgyz students performed national songs and dances, recited excerpts from Manas, and played traditional instruments. Guests had the opportunity to explore books and illustrations on Kyrgyz culture, view handicrafts with national ornaments, and enjoy traditional dishes. Free pilaf was served along with traditional beverages — maksym and chalap.
“Nazarbayev University is proud to be home to a growing community of international students and scholars. Our campus hosts 13 students and two distinguished professors from Kyrgyzstan, and today’s event is a vivid testament to their contributions to NU’s academic and cultural life. Let us use such occasions not only to experience another culture but also to deepen our mutual understanding. Because when we come together to learn, to share, and to celebrate, we build a stronger, more open, and more inclusive community,” noted Aray Saniyazova, NU’s Head of International Students and Scholars Services at the Department of Internationalization.
