Kazakhstan Builds Its Own AI Ecosystem and KazLLM.
Kazakhstan views digitalization and the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence as key drivers of national development. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev made this statement during a meeting with Yann LeCun, Vice President & Chief AI Scientist at Meta’s FAIR lab. The two sides exchanged views on the development and application of innovative technologies.
Recognizing Yann LeCun’s achievements in the field of neural networks, the Head of State emphasized that Kazakhstan is making significant efforts to build its own AI ecosystem and to develop a large language model for the Kazakh language — KazLLM.
KazLLM was developed by the Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence at Nazarbayev University (ISSAI NU) to harness the power of generative AI for improving quality of life and driving economic growth. The model can generate content in Kazakh, Russian, English, and Turkish. In December last year, the ISSAI NU team presented KazLLM to the President; it is available in two versions — with 8 billion and 70 billion parameters.
The high-level meeting also referenced a previously signed agreement with Meta Platforms Inc. to launch a joint accelerator program aimed at advancing AI technologies in Kazakhstan.
