The Kazakhstan Chapter of WtERT opened at the NU School of Engineering and Digital Sciences (NU SEDS). NU Professor John Kim, Head of the Department of civil and environmental engineering at NU SEDS will lead this Chapter.

This happened after NU President Shigeo Katsu, Global WtERT Council Inc. President, Professor Nickolas J. Themelis and Global WtERT Council, Inc. Vice President for International Relations Reda M. Kabbaj signed the specific Agreement to cooperate in research and development of waste-to-energy technologies.

Global WtERT Council Inc. is the foremost research organization that brings together and contribute to high-level dialogue among scientists, engineers, community advocates, the business community, universities and government concerning the objective of advancing sustainable technologies for managing waste management worldwide.

It was founded in 2002 as major program of the Earth Engineering Center (EEC) of Columbia University in U.S.A, which has conducted since 1997 research on the generation and disposition of used materials and products in the State and globally. Thus, this agreement opens access for NU research staff and students to the resources of Columbia University, as well as top universities in Japan and Europe, WtERT members.

Notably, New York City Mayor Eric Adams collaborated with WtERT and the Center for Earth Engineering at Columbia University on waste-to-energy projects. Among the most successful projects in the world is the project of the First Lady of Turkey, who, together with WtERT, opened a $200 million waste-to-energy facility. This project, funded mainly by foreign direct investment, has become a leader in this field throughout the region.
