Exploring the Future of AI: Insights from Digital Almaty 2024

The Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence (ISSAI) of NU took part in the forum, presenting its developments in the field of Kazakh AI. The ISSAI team launched several new research initiatives during the forum, demonstrating Kazakhstan’s dedication to advancing AI technologies.

The ISSAI team launched several new research initiatives during the forum, demonstrating Kazakhstan’s dedication to advancing AI technologies. Notable among these projects were the neural machine translation model Tilmash, the automatic speech command recognition model Soyle, tensegrity robots, and the Kazakh text-to-speech engine.

Kazakh Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov and delegates from the Eurasian Economic Union visited the ISSAI booth, where Deputy Director Yerbol Absalyamov showcased the institute’s groundbreaking projects. The guests were impressed by ISSAI’s commitment to open-access datasets and models.

Other high-profile guests included Darkhan Ahmed-Zaki, Kazakhstan’s Vice Minister of Science and Higher Education, and Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim, Professor at the Singapore Institute of Technology and former Singaporean Minister-in-charge of Cybersecurity. Both expressed admiration for ISSAI’s high-quality research laboratories and significant contributions to the development of AI in Kazakhstan.

Additionally, ISSAI Founding Director and NU robotics professor Dr. Atakan Varol took part in a panel session on Machine Learning. There he talked about the Kazakh text-to-speech and Soyle speech recognition models, as well as indicated the significance of developing national Large Language Models (LLM) for Kazakhstan.

Digital Almaty 2024 is a dialogue platform for discussing the agenda, transformation, and trends in digital technologies. This year the forum focused on “Industry X – Digital Evolution of the Future,” which engaged different experts and entrepreneurs, who shared their experiences and ideas aimed at shaping a new era of the digital industry.
