On September 1, 2023, the UMC Motherhood and Childhood Center celebrated the beginning of the school year for schoolchildren. As part of the event, the UMC Motherhood and Childhood Center received a visit from the Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Tamara Duisenova, along with the Kazakh Minister of Education, Beisembayev Gani, Kazakh Vice Minister of Health, Dudnik Vyacheslav, acting NU President Ilesanmi Adesida, and Vice President for Medicine and Dean of NU School of Medicine, Massimo Pignatelli.
In her congratulatory speech, Tamara Duisenova addressed the child patients: “Today, three million children have gone to school. I am proud that there are young individuals who not only fight but also possess the willpower to pursue their education. I know that each of you will excel academically and will return to your schools. When we meet again, I’ll recognize each of you as a winner in everything you do!”
Today, the Center treats patients with oncohematological diseases, children undergoing dialysis treatment, and those who have undergone organ transplantation. A total of 4,400 children are registered with cancer in Kazakhstan. The latest methods for treating oncological diseases, such as high-dose chemotherapy for tumors, targeted immunotherapy, endoprosthesis replacement of bones and joints, and bone marrow autotransplantation, are being studied and implemented in our country. Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation has been performed at UMC since April 2012.
Congratulating the schoolchildren, Yuri Pya, Chairman of the UMC Board, expressed the clinic’s commitment to utilizing all available technologies and knowledge for the treatment of children. “I wish that all of you who received words of encouragement today will achieve your dreams. Some of you may return here as mentors, professors, doctors, nurses, and staff of this clinic. You will look back on this day with fond memories,” wished the honored surgeon of Kazakhstan.
As child patients receive treatment for extended periods, the UMC Maternity and Childhood Center is equipped with a classroom where school-age children receive instruction in core subjects. On average, 146 children per year acquire knowledge within the Center’s walls. In accordance with the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan’s program, these children receive grades that are sent to their respective schools, allowing them to complete a quarter or grade and receive the appropriate educational documentation.
According to the Strategy 2018-2030 of NU, UMC is part of the integrated academic healthcare system of NU (NU Medicine), the goal of which is to advance healthcare in Kazakhstan through the integration of clinical, educational and research activities. For this reason, there are being carried out activities that contribute to the development of UMC as an Academic Medical Center. UMC was accredited according to the standards of Joint Commission International.
On the Day of Knowledge, new books were donated to the Center’s library. At the conclusion of the visit, a festive event was held for the children, where they were wished good health and success in the new academic year!
