The program “Academic Leadership Institute” has been launched at NU, developed by the Higher School of Education of NU on the Ministry of Science and Higher Education initiative of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

During the training, the management staff of universities – rectors, vice-rectors, deans and directors of departments – will update their knowledge and gain new skills and innovative technologies necessary to manage universities in today’s complex and dynamic environment effectively.

Minister Sayasat Nurbek and President of NU Shigeo Katsu took part in the launch of the training program.

“The Academic Leadership Institute program will become not only a source of new knowledge but also an excellent platform for professionals to network, discuss problems and interact to spread managerial innovations in higher education,” said Sayasat Nurbek.

Also, in his speech, the Minister told the seminar participants about the international trends of the higher education system, emphasizing the role and participation of the Kazakhstan education system. In particular, the head of the department focused on eight main areas of development of the Ministry, including corporate operational management, where the resources and experience of the Higher School of Education of NU will be used, analysis of business processes in universities and application of the Kaizen methodology, as well as a phased increase in salaries of the faculty and AMP.

In his welcoming speech to the Academic Leadership Institute program participants, the President of NU spoke about the correlation and connection between the Sustainable Development Goals and the philosophy of higher education. Shigeo Katsu spoke about the “middle-income trap” that middle-income countries fall into, which cannot move to a high-income economy in the short term due to rising costs and declining competitiveness.

“The emerging middle class, the development of education, the promotion of science and research and the development of technology – these are the factors that are important for countries to overcome the “ceiling” and make a leap. This is the importance of high–quality higher education, and universities should play a decisive role in this,” said President of NU Shigeo Katsu, presenting a program of training courses for university leaders.

The Academic Leadership Institute programme consists of 9 modules, each covering specific transformation processes in the university, such as university values and their importance to society, leadership, university restructuring, student affairs and quality assurance in academic programmes, etc.

The course will last from April to October 2023. It will include lectures by representatives of ministries, deputies of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and national and international experts in higher education.
