Nazarbayev University is a member of the following global and regional associations in higher education.

International Association of Universities
The International Association of Universities (IAU) is the UNESCO-based worldwide association of higher-education institutions, founded in 1950.
Mission
The activities of IAU are aimed at promoting collaboration among its members to pursue the creation, dissemination and application of knowledge, to advocate joint learning and action, and to act as a forum for innovation, analysis and monitoring of the development of higher education.
Membership
The Association unites 600 universities and organizations from more than 120 countries. As a global network, IAU has member institutions on every continent with the following distribution:
- Europe: 40%
- Asia and Pacific: 24%
- Middle East: 13%
- Africa: 11%
- North America: 7%
- Latin America and Caribbean: 5%
NU joined IAU in 2015. There are also three other Kazakhstani higher-education institutions in the association.

Asian Universities Alliance (co-founder)
The Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) was established on April 29, 2017. NU is one of the co-founding members. The opening ceremony was held in Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. About 400 professors and students representing 15 universities from 13 countries took part in the work of the first meeting of the alliance.
Mission
The alliance is aimed at joint consideration of regional and global issues in the fields of higher education, economic, scientific, and technological development through strengthening cooperation among member institutions.

University Alliance of the Silk Road (member of the Executive Council)
The University Alliance of the Silk Road (UASR) is a non-governmental and non-profitable organization aimed at openness and international cooperation in higher-education. UASR unites higher education institutions from the countries located on the historical route of the Great Silk Road.
Within the strategy of the Chinese government’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative, Xi’an Jiaotong University started the Academic Belt of the Silk Road in January 2015 to establish the Alliance with domestic and foreign universities from Asia, Europe, America, and Australia.
Mission
UASR is aimed at promoting cooperation in the field of higher education, student exchange, enrichment of their educational experience, intercultural communication, as well as development of joint projects and research, enhancing understanding and friendship between young people, fostering quality and all-round talents with international visions, and facilitating the economic growth of countries on the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Eurasian region.

European University Association
We are pleased to inform you that NU has become a member of the European University Association. The EUA is the most extensive network of European universities, comprising more than 850 members.
The association provides a unique support network and access to collaborative platforms that contribute to the strategic development of its member institutions.
Through joining EUA expert groups and projects, NU community members have the opportunity to influence higher-education and research- policy decisions.
And lastly, community members may benefit from reduced fees for development programmes, events and conferences organized by EUA and other affiliated organizations.

Institutional Evaluation
NU was engaged in the Institutional Evaluation Programme (IEP) of the European University Association (EUA), between 2017 and 2020, to obtain an independent external review of its academic quality, research, and strategic management practices.
NU successfully completed the initial and follow-up phases of the external evaluation and continues its efforts at self-improvement. Please read relevant reports on the IEP EUA website.

May 2022 – Publication in the IAU Horizons magazine
In the 16th issue of IAU Horizons on “Relevance and Value of Universities to Future Society,” President Shigeo Katsu, Provost Ilesanmi Adesida, Vice Provost Loretta O’Donnell and Head of the Office of Global Relations Aliya Kaimoldinova spoke about reinventing higher education and what the Covid-19 pandemic can teach us.

May 13-15: Annual Going Global Conference on the “Knowledge diplomacy and the digital world: does international tertiary education have a role?”
At the Going Global Conference in 2019, NU was represented by the vice president for Student Affairs and International Cooperation, Kadisha Dairova and the acting director of the Department of International Cooperation, Madina Aitakanova, who presented the poster on the “Global Partnerships and Their Impact on the Development of Local Higher Education.”

February 18-21: AIEA Annual Conference on “The Internationalization Imperative in Turbulent Times”
In 2018, Director of the Department of International Cooperation Aliya Kaimoldinova and Sharing Experience Coordinator Madina Aitakanova participated in the AIEA Conference and at one of the sessions spoke about “Alliances under the Belt and Road Initiative: University Partnerships between China and Kazakhstan.”
