Expert-manager of the Reference Department of the «Nazarbayev University Library and IT Services» PE, Library Directorate


Key and functional tasks of the department

Provision of reference services to library users; training the users on information search strategies and work with the main library resources


Key and functional tasks of the position

1. Search for requested information locally or remotely;

2. Assist library users in finding print and electronic materials;

3. Individual and group consultations for library users regarding the library and searching for information;

4. Developing, organizing, and conducting information literacy sessions for different categories of library users;

5. Participation in the development and implementation of thematic trainings according to the requests of the structural units of the University;

6. Work with individual schools and research centers of the university as a Subject Librarian;

7. Inform library users about available library resources in their area of ​​expertise as well as offering trainings;

8. The development of thematic electronic and printed manuals, brochures, and other handouts as part of Subject Librarian activity;

9. The development of library collections, print and electronic, in assigned subject areas;

10. Library collections analysis in assigned subject areas, as well as the study of the information needs of certain groups of library users;

11. Continued cooperation with University schools and research centers;

12. Participation in activities aimed at the promotion of the library collection and promoting user awareness;

13. The delivery of resources not available in the library collection, in cooperation with partner universities;

14. Organizing feedback from users (registration and analysis of user satisfaction with service);

15. Developing guidelines, regulations, and instructions on the basic directions of activity;

16. Developing and implementing training programs for library workers;

17. Developing and implementing projects in specialized areas of librarianship in order to further the development of the library;

18. Developing and implementing workshops for convey best practices to Kazakhstani librarians.



  A master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an accredited university in the United States, Canada, Europe, or Southeast Asia


The required professional experience (period, field, other)

•        At least 2 years’ relevant experience
•        At least 2 publications relating to librarianship
•        Understanding of organizational structure relating to information activities, broad cultural experience
•        Experience developing workshops and seminars to share experiences and best practices in librarianship 
•        Knowledge of current print and electronic resources and information organization and management tools 
•        Ability to conduct instruction sessions in information literacy and critical thinking for both faculty and students 
•        Ability to provide training for local staff’s professional development

·           Coach and mentorship experience

·            Experience as a subject librarian

Proficiency in languages

Excellent English with IELTS minimum 6.0 / TOEFL minimum 79-93 (certificate validity interval makes no matter) or Diploma/University Certificate, with English as a language of tuition
