World Safer Internet Day was celebrated on February 11 in more than 100 countries on 6 continents. The event started in 2004, but this was the first that with Kazakhstan participation . For the first time we organized activities related to this important issue in Nazarbayev University. “We hope it will become an annual event which will spread around the country in secondary schools, Universities, and all educational organizations. This year, the motto is ‘Let’s create a better Internet together’. And of course, as active Internet users, we can make it happen! We call to participate in this initiative all people interested,” – said Simon Jones, Provost of Nazarbayev University.
The following activities were organized in the frameworks of celebrating World Safer Internet Day at Nazarbayev University on February 11, 2014:
Educause winning videoclips on online safety and security were demonstrated in the afternoon in the atrium. Everyone had the opportunity to check the strength of their passwords and learn how to make them better. They could get tips for safe online banking and shopping, how to protect their mobile devices, how to avoid spam and phishing, along with information on good practices for their digital footprint. Faculty, staff and students could also learn the effective tips on the use of social media. All the ‘stations’ were maintained by NU students. The NU library created special literature collection for this particular topic and the blog informing on internet security was created:
The Nazarbayev University Cyber Security Pledge was signed by students, staff and faculty.
Finally, the evening ended with a public debate in celebration of World Safer Internet Day at the Students’ Nomad Debate Club.
