Students of Nazarbayev University are the finalists of the 19th Inter-Varsity tournament of Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, Latvia

On December 9-10, 2017, in Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, Latvia, the 19th European Inter-Varsity tournament took place. The tournament is a type of a platform to compete for both professionals and novices, consisted of five rounds where the participants presented 7-minute speeches, and two finales: Novice final and English as Foreign language (EFL) final.

Students of Nazarbayev University “Nomad” debate club participated in the European Inter-Varsity tournament for the second time but it is for the first time this year that Milana Mukiyeva and Alisher Dzhuzgenbayev became finalists of the EFL final.

In addition, for the first time “Nomad” debate club won five out of six available Cups of the Newcomers’ Tournament, one of the most important city events, organized by Astana Debate society. In 2017, Nazarbayev University was chosen as the venue for the Newcomers’ Tournament. There were six debate clubs in three language leagues: 36 teams in Kazakh league, 24 teams in English and 12 in Russian league.

In Kazakh league, Zarina Zhunissova and Suleimen Yerkinov became champions, and Zhaksylyk Oglanbekov with Aset Zhumatai became finalists of the tournament. Also, the second best speaker of the tournament became Gulnaz Zhambulova.

In English league, Yassawe Kainolda and Dana Tolegenova became champions of Newcomers’ Tournament, Yassawe was recognized as the Best Speaker as well. There have been three more teams in the final, all from our debate club — Marzhan Kabzhassarova, Dana Aubakirova, Beksultan Kemel, Shynar Akhmetova, Nurzhan Zeinulla, and Rustem Khalikhan.

In Russian league, students Shynggys Saparbek and Darina Kozhakhmetova won the Newcomers’ Tournament, where Shynggys also became the Best Speaker. In addition, Rustem Turtayev and Yevgeniy Lukhmanov reached the final of the tournament.
