SST Dean’s List Award Ceremony

On February 8, 2018, Dean’s List Award Ceremony for SST students took place in the new Atrium of Nazarbayev University. 120 undergraduate and 20 graduate students received certificates from the hands of the Dean Vassilios Tourassis and Vice-Dean Michael Lewis.

The ceremony started with the speech of Science and Technology School’s Dean – Vassilios Tourassis.

– This year the students’ achievement was higher than usual – the number of students who earned a place in the Dean’s List is 140. Moreover, 30 of them got the highest result – GPA 4.0, – stated Dr. Vassilios Tourassis.

Later on, Vassilois Kovanis, the Chair of Physics department, Adnan Yazici, the Chair of Computer Science department, and professor Gonzalo Hap Hortelano delivered their congratulatory speeches to the students. Vassilois Kovanis shared great news that three senior students from their department were invited to the Master’s program at the following universities: Graduate School of Colombia, University of Michigan, Purdue University

– I am proud of all of them. Healthy competition makes students move forward. The only thing we want is to save this team spirit, so we try to encourage and motivate everyone, – said Vassilios Tourassis at the end of the ceremony

Despite the fact that students spend a lot of time to study, many of them manage to do other things. For example, Elvira Abzhanova, a senior student of SST, combines her studies at the university with scientific work at National Laboratory Astana. She works on three projects, two of which are related to brain diseases: Alzheimer’s disease and stroke, and the third project is related to cancer research. She wants to become a surgeon and plans to enter Nazarbayev University School of Medicine. In addition, Elvira is engaged in social activities. She is a member of non-profit organization Children Development Foundation. It aims to advance childhood education and expand educational opportunities for vulnerable populations. Once a week she works as an English teacher for children. Recently, she was a participant in the charitable project “Warm Winter”, during which she helped children from low-income families with clothes, medicines and other necessary things.

Second year student Sabina Sagynbayeva for the first time got on the Dean’s list. After graduating she wants to pursue a PhD in physics. Sabina says that there are not so many girls with her major, but she believes that girls can make a significant contribution to the development of science. Furthermore, she said that instead of rivalry there is a mutual assistance among SST students.

In her spare time, Sabina is engaged in dancing. For her dancing is like psychotherapy: it helps her to relieve stress and forget about all the problems. She is also engaged in music: she plays the drums and piano.

It should be noted, that the Dean’s list award is given to students who perform well during the semester with GPA not lower than 3.75.
