School of Humanities and Social Sciences hosted annual ASEEES-CESS Joint Regional Conference dedicated to the studies of Eurasian region.

On May 22-24, 2014 Nazarbayev University hosted joint regional conference of Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) and Central Eurasian Studies Society (CESS). ASEEES-CESS joint regional conference is one of the biggest multi-disciplinary conferences about Eurasian region. It is the first time when ASEEES hosted its conference in Eurasia, in particular in Kazakhstan.

ASEEES-CESS conference is especially interesting to scientists and practitioners from the fields of humanities and social sciences and covers wide variety of topics, such as anthropology, economics, education, history, languages and literature, sociology, and others.  Conference featured two key speakers: Professor Chris Hann, Director of the Max-Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (Halle/Saale, Germany) with the presentation on “Towards a Maximally Inclusive Concept of Eurasia” and Professor Almira Ousmanova, Professor of Media Studies, European Humanities University (Vilnius, Lithuania) with the presentation on “For an Engaged Knowledge: On the Relevance of Marxism for the Studies of Post-Socialist Cultures”

As mentioned by John Schoeberlein, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the ASEEES-CESS joint conference, Director of Center for Eurasian Regional Studies and Associate Professor at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Nazarbayev University, this conference gives a unique opportunity to local scientists and scientists from neighboring countries to participate in the scientific discussion with international colleagues and improve international collaboration. Also participation in the conference gives opportunity for foreign and local scientists to present their work in the context of international research. This year John Shoberlain was elected to be the next president of CESS.

The conference consisted of 80 panel sessions, 250 presentations and was attended by 300 participants from 39 countries: 76 panelists from USA, 70 from Kazakhstan, 33 from Russia, and 36 from European countries.
