Nursultan Nazarbayev started his visit at on-campus student dormitories. The students in informal conversation told about how they live and study at Nazarbayev University.
Then the Head of the State vistied labs that were launched at Nazarbayev University at the beginning of 2012. Biology, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Biotechnologies, and Microbiology labs, Preparatory and Sanitizing rooms as well as Optics, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Chemical Synthesis labs were in the visiting list. Today both Foundation and Undergraduate students and young researchers use the lab facilities. At the present time, 40 scientific projects are being run at these labs by researchers of the Center for Energy Research and the Center for Life Sciences.
The program for the Head of State’s visit also included visiting the Nazarbayev University Library. Today it is the most progressive academic library in Kazakhstan; it also has the largest local collection of books, periodicals and e-resources in the English language. The Library is equipped with modern machines for scanning, digitalizing and cleaning books, and also with special equipment for disabled users. The Department of Kazakh language and literature and general information on academic activities at the university were also presented to the President in the Library.
Currently 942 students are studying at Nazarbayev University, 942 of them are Foundation program students, and 460 are undergraduate students studying their 1st course. Undergraduate programs are currently offered in the School of Engineering, the School of Science and Technology, and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Nazarbayev University has registered 4178 applications from all the regions of Kazakhstan for the 2012-2013 school year. The Admissions Office also received 45 applications from other countries. And again this year, 500 Kazakhstani government scholarships have been granted for Kazakhstani citizens who will study at the Nazarbayev University Foundation Program.
By March 1, 2012 the first exam in English language proficiency (BCEPT) test for prospective applicants had been conducted in 12 of 16 Kazakhstani regions. Moreover, this year Nazarbayev University will begin to admit highly qualified students directly into the bachelor’s degree program without the obligatory foundation program.
In the end of his visit, President Nursultan Nazarbayev got acquainted with the university campus construction plan and had pictures taken with university students.
