Sociology and Anthropology Students Association organized a march in support of gender equality in Kazakhstan, which was supported by coalitions of NU student clubs and professors. The march was arranged on the University campus to celebrate International Women's Day on March 8.
The main aim of the event was to draw attention to the women's issues in Kazakhstan such as gender inequality in wages, insufficient representation of women in STEM professions and administrative positions, gender stereotypes in Kazakhstan that prevent women from equal participation in public life.
“As students of one of the leading higher educational institutions in Kazakhstan - NU, we strongly believe in the need to raise the issue of women's rights in today's world, striving for equality and justice. This march is important for us as a way to express our solidarity with the idea of gender equality and recall the social significance of March 8 as Women's Rights Day. We would like to support our fellow countrywomen all over the country and highlight the position of NU as an open and progressive institution that supports young people’s initiative", said Lilia Mukhamedzhanova, a member of the Student Association of Sociologists and Anthropologists.
The student organizers read out the manifesto of the march, where they expressed their position against domestic violence and harassment, and drew attention to the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the existing problems of women in education and work. More than 100 people took part in the march.
