On May 29, 2023, NU, the International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the Auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI), and the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) signed a memorandum of understanding.
The UNESCO-ICHEI delegation arrived for the first time on a visit to Central Asia. NU President Shigeo Katsu warmly welcomed Prof. Han Wei, Executive Deputy Director of ICUNESCO-ICHEI, and Prof. Lu Chun, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of SUSTech, who participated in the meeting online. President Katsu spoke about the achievements, strategic plan, and directions of development of NU.
The signed trilateral memorandum is aimed at developing cooperation in the field of education and the exchange of experience in research activities. Namely, one of the leading Kazakh and Chinese universities and the International Center for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO will cooperate on organizing third-party capacity building training programs; participating in activities related to the International Institute for Online Education (IIOE); bidding jointly for international consultancies and research work, and more.
Professor Han Wei expressed her hope for practical cooperation with a flagship university like NU and called this partnership an impetus for realizing the digital transformation of higher education in Kazakhstan. She noted that UNESCO-ICHEI is implementing a project to promote the professional development of university teachers through micro-certifications. She cordially invited delegates of NU to participate in the Launching Ceremony of this Micro-certification program and IIOE Global Partners Summit to be held in July and December this year respectively.
Professor Lu Chun spoke about the achievements of his university and expressed his hope for a broad partnership. He also specifically noted that the Southern University of Science and Technology, like NU, was established in 2010 and has the same ambitious strategic goals.
The parties assured that the signed memorandum will be mutually beneficial for everyone and will bear fruit as effective cooperation and the expansion of the potential of higher education in Asia. After the meeting, the guests were given a tour of the NU campus.

The International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO was founded on June 8, 2016. On November 13, 2015, the 38th General Conference of UNESCO approved the founding of UNESCO-ICHEI in Shenzhen, China, which is the tenth education Category II centre in the world, and the first Category II centre focusing on higher education in China. UNESCO-ICHEI's work is closely tied to the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Education 2030) in every respect. In 13 years, SUSTech is becoming the important epicentre for China’s science and technology academic research and for the cultivation of innovative minds.
