NU School of Medicine Received Full International Accreditation for its Doctor of Medicine (MD) program from ECAQA.

The Eurasian Centre for Accreditation and Quality Assurance in Higher Education and Health Care (ECAQA) is a member of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education and has been recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education. The five-year accreditation confirmed that the Doctor of Medicine program of the NU School of Medicine meets rigorous standards of quality and excellence in medical education. The curriculum, faculty qualifications, research opportunities, student support services, and clinical facilities were comprehensively evaluated.

“Receiving full accreditation from ECAQA for our Doctor of Medicine program is a significant milestone for Nazarbayev University School of Medicine. It reflects the hard work and commitment of our faculty, staff, and students and reaffirms our mission to deliver top-tier medical education. This recognition enhances our ability to prepare future physicians equipped to meet the evolving healthcare needs of our community and beyond,” said Dr. Massimo Pignatelli, Vice President and Dean of the NU School of Medicine.

What does the full ECAQA accreditation mean for students? It guarantees the quality of their education. Over two years, ECAQA experts meticulously reviewed the program, confirming its adherence to international best practices and its provision of quality education, advanced clinical facilities, and technologies. Furthermore, the accreditation opens doors for medical graduates, offering more employment opportunities in prestigious medical institutions and avenues for further education.

The four-year Doctor of Medicine program is based on the United States educational model, where students enter with a basic medical or other related degree. Training is patient-centered and students spend the first two years in weekly sessions at UMC hospitals and the final two years in clinical practice. Further residency and doctoral training can be pursued with an MD degree. In total, the School has 22 training programs from undergraduate to residency, which have already graduated about 500 people.

For the university, international accreditation means increased prestige at the global level, attracting more applicants, including foreign ones. Moreover, the NU School of Medicine is committed to improving its programs and research to build a medical community of leaders.

Since its establishment in 2015, the NU School of Medicine has succeeded in creating an innovative healthcare system that includes NU Research Laboratories and the University Medical Center (UMC) with academic clinical departments where students gain clinical experience and complete residencies after graduation. Thus, the stage is set for the Academic Medical Center to become an international medical hub with the support of partner University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
