On February 28, Nazarbayev University (NU) hosted the Cultural Diversity Fest, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan (APK).

The event was organized by the Association of International Students and the Union of Graduate Student Union of NU. NU hosts students from 35 countries across various programs, while its faculty represents 52 countries worldwide. Each individual carries the cultural code of their country, emphasized Aray Saniyazova, Head of International Students and Scholars Services at NU: “This special 'World on Wednesday' meeting is dedicated to the important event of the 30th anniversary of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, a unique model of unity that Kazakhstan, a multicultural country with over 120 ethnic groups, is justly proud of. I would like to express my gratitude to our international community for choosing Nazarbayev University and Kazakhstan for their studies and work, for bringing diversity and vibrancy to our multinational and multicultural society.”

Kadisha Dairova, Vice President of the University for Student Affairs and International Cooperation, emphasized the importance of cultural exchange within the university environment, calling NU a miniature model of the United Nations.

“When we established the university in 2010, we could only dream of attracting international students. Today, we have 215 students from different countries, and we hope to continue growing this number. Kazakhstan is a multinational country, and Nazarbayev University reflects this diversity of cultures. We often say that we are a mirror of society, but in reality, people call us a mini-version of the United Nations. And honestly, this is true,” said K. Dairova.

A special guest at the event, Timur Jumurbaev, Chairman of the Public Association “Assembly of Youth” of the APK, spoke about the youth branch of the Assembly, which unites over 10,000 active young people across Kazakhstan. He discussed the ongoing projects aimed at unlocking the potential of the youth and invited NU students to join the youth branch of the APK.

“The Assembly of Youth was created by the order of the Head of State in 2021, and since then, it has held more than 3,000 events. Student assemblies are actively developing, operating in over 50 universities and colleges across the country. These initiatives create platforms for student self-realization, promote student governance, and help introduce foreign students to the rich culture of Kazakhstan. I would like to invite Nazarbayev University to join our network of student assemblies,” he stated.

The event continued with a talent show, where international students showcased the cultural diversity of their countries. Special attention was given to an exhibition organized by foreign students, where participants presented elements of their national traditions and cultures, including national costumes and musical instruments. This allowed the audience to learn more about the diversity of cultures. The event concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing the most active participants.
