During October 24-28, 2018, Nazarbayev Students traveled to Boston, USA to participate in the synthetic biology competition iGEM 2018 (International Genetically Engineered Machine). NU has attended and placed in past years at iGEM, but for the first time ever the team “NU_Kazakhstan” was nominated for a standard track award – The Best Environment Project. The team was among the top five projects in this category, and received a Gold medal.
Team members for this year's competition are Daulet Aitymbayev, Assel Mukhanova, Aigerim Abdimanova, Lyazzat Bekish, Nikhola Mirashirova, Kuanysh Sarkytbayev, Atabek Bektash, Aidana Toleshova, Tomiris Mulikova, Ayagoz Meirkhanova, Ramina Abdymananova, Alyamdar Askerov, Aiganym Abduraimova, Nurgul Makhmetova, and Malika Khassenova.
Three students from Nazarbayev University School of Science and Technology, Daulet Aitymbayev, Assel Mukhanova and Aigerim Abdimanova presented their project “From a Dangerous Waste to Functional Nanomaterials: Bioremediation of Sour Crude Oil Waste using Cyanobacteria” at the international iGEM competition. Last year, three senior students from School of Science and Technology, Valdemir Kim, Mariyam Akizhanova and Yerkezhan Kalikanova presented their project “Bioremediation of hexavalent chromium using Chlamydomonas reinhardtii” at the same international synthetic biology competition and won a gold medal.
