Asian Universities Alliance’s (AUA) Board Meeting was held on April 9th in Sanya, China. Senior officials from 15 founding member institutions of the Alliance participated in the meeting, including Mr. Shigeo Katsu, President of Nazarbayev University (NU), Professor Ilesanmi Adesida, NU Provost and Arman Zhumazhanov, Head of the NU Office of the President.
The focus of the meeting was on future development strategies and policies of AUA, activities in the area of student, staff and faculty mobility, research collaboration, as well as financial and budgeting reporting and planning, and more.
The Board voted Nazarbayev University to host and run two programs: Deep Dive Asia, a two-week culture immersion program for students in 2018, and Student Competition “Global Governance in the 21st Century” in 2019.
At the meeting, it was also decided that after the Executive Presidency of Universitas Indonesia for 2018-2019, the University of Colombo would serve as an executive body for 2019-2020.
The meeting was followed by the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2018. This year’s conference theme was “An Open and Innovative Asia for a World of Greater Prosperity”. Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony. Within the framework of the BFA, leaders of AUA institutions participated in the Higher Education Roundtable discussing issues such as the responsibilities and missions of Asian universities, the impact of Asian universities on the Fourth Industrial Revolution, innovation, and the transfer of technology.
Background information on Asian Universities Alliances: In 2017, fifteen flagship universities of the respective nations from across Asia jointly launched the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA), which is a first of its kind coalition with global commitment, excellence and networks. The mission of the Alliance is to jointly address regional and global challenges, specifically related to higher education and economic, scientific and technological development, by strengthening collaboration among each other.
