The community of the Autonomous Organization of Education “NU” (hereinafter referred to as NU, NU ) expresses its sincere condolences on the accidental death of Assem Zharbossyn, which happened on the evening of January 17th, 2023. She was a 2020 graduate of NU's Chemical and Materials Engineering master's program.  In 2021, Assem was accepted to the doctoral program at the University of Salerno (Italy) as the recipient of a scholarship awarded through the TUSAIL project. She was selected for the results of her first research conducted during her graduate studies at NU.

As part of the Powder Technology research group at NU, Assem studied the tortuosity of porous electrodes using Voronoi tessellations, and also worked on extensive mathematical data. In a short time, she has published several scientific papers in international journals. In 2019, she presented her research project at the Tokyo International Conference in Japan, which won the Fostering Research and Innovation Potential (FRIP) student project competition.

Former colleagues, and fellow researchers remember Assem as a kind-hearted, compassionate young woman driven by scientific curiosity and full of dreams of doing something that can help the world.  She had contributed to the development of science.

“Assem was a kind young woman of heavenly beauty. Delicate and shy, and yet very bright and gifted. She studied at the school for talented kids, and played the dombra masterfully. She was the kind of daughter that all parents dream of. During her undergraduate studies at the Eurasian National University, Assem did her diploma project with me, which was related to the synthesis of graphene on nickel foam. After a successful project, she was admitted to NU, and then graduated with success. Assem was meticulous in her research, her lab notes looked like a work of art, letter by letter, number by number. Later, I set her records as an example for everyone. This is a very big loss and tragedy for all of us, in which one does not want to believe. We express our condolences to the family and relatives and mourn with them,” Aliya Mukanova, lead researcher at National Laboratory Astana (NLA) expressed.

We convey our condolences to the family and friends of Assem, whose life was cut short so suddenly.

NU Alumni Association is organizing a fundraiser for the family of Assem Zharbossyn.
